Haddin set sights on 2015 World Cup

Brad Haddin has his sights set on playing until the 2015 World Cup in Australia, despite not being Australia's regular gloveman in the 50-over format.
Haddin has taken back the Test wicketkeeping role from Matthew Wade on this tour and enters The Oval Test on the verge of breaking the all-time record for most dismissals in a Test series. He hopes he can also feature not only in Australia's upcoming Ashes series at home but the World Cup that follows in 2015.
If he gets his wish - he will be 37 by the World Cup - it would be a remarkable comeback from Haddin, who six months ago had been usurped by Wade as Australia's first-choice gloveman in all formats. He was brought back into the Test side for this Ashes trip to provide some valuable experience and to serve as Michael Clarke's vice-captain, and Haddin believes he has plenty to offer beyond the immediate future and in one-day cricket, despite having played only three ODIs in 18 months.
"I think I've still got a lot of cricket left in me now and to the 2015 World Cup. So I'm keen to play there," Haddin said. "The vice-captaincy, it was an honour to do that on this tour but it doesn't change the role or how you look at things. You've still got to perform. You still have to be challenging yourself to get better."
Haddin is such a team man that when he was asked about an approaching record that might be broken at The Oval, his initial response was: "For losing?" In fact, the record that is under threat is a personal one, and one that Haddin alone will rewrite if he collects at least four dismissals during the Test. That would take him past Rod Marsh's all-time world record of 28 wicketkeeping dismissals in a series, set in in the 1982-83 Ashes series in Australia.
Australia won that series 2-1, yet in England this year they are at risk of suffering a 4-0 thrashing despite the opportunities created by the bowlers and accepted by Haddin behind the stumps. That says plenty about Australia's batting on this tour and Haddin said record or no record, chances or no chances, Australia had to find a way of adding some runs to the mix.
"I was not aware of the record at all," Haddin said. "I'd take that back for a win. You don't go into games looking for personal achievement; you go in looking to win. If you tick those milestones off on the way, it's flattering but also pretty hollow if you don't win any cricket games. I'd love to win this one moving forward to Australia.
"We've got a pretty good stock of fast bowlers there; especially with Ryan Harris being able to play the couple of back-to-back Tests that he hasn't done previously. I think I've got a few off Nathan Lyon in the last few Tests, so it was good to have him back in the game. Our bowling group has been very consistent for a long time. We've just got to find some runs."
Haddin included himself in that remark, well aware that his 13 in the second innings in Chester-le-Street was inadequate given Australia needed a steadying presence in the middle order after losing quick wickets. With the bat, Haddin has scored two half-centuries and six low scores during this series, but he is happy with the way he is working behind the stumps.
"I feel comfortable with where my keeping is at," he said. "It's felt especially good the last couple of games. It wasn't where I wanted it to be after Lord's but it's back to the rhythm that I've been keeping for the last couple of years."

FLASHBACK:

The 2011 edition was held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Bangladesh were given the chance to co-host when matches to be played in Pakistan were shifted due to security concerns. India won the tournament with a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Mumbai. The game that pulled in the maximum viewership in and out of the stadium was the semi-final clash between India and Pakistan in Mohali. India beat Pakistan by 29 runs to maintain their unbeaten record against their arch-rivals in World Cup cricket. The major upset of the tournament was Ireland's 3-wicket win over England in Bangalore when Kevin O'Brien's 113 off 63 balls took the minnows to a famous victory.

DID YOU KNOW?

India won the final in Mumbai chasing down a target of 275 with 6 wickets and 10 balls to spare. Gautam Gambhir top-socred with 97 and MS Dhoni's 91 not out took India to victory.

The match that brought the most viewership in the tournament was none other than the semi-final between India and Pakistan. A mouth-watering contest in which the Men in Blue triumphed over their arch-rivals by 29 runs in Mohali.

14 teams took part in the 2011 World Cup. They were divided into two groups. Group A consisted of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Canada and Kenya. Group B was made up by South Africa, India, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, Ireland and Netherlands.

The other semi-final between Sri Lanka and New Zealand was relatively one sided. Sri Lanka chased down a target comfortably with 5 wickets in hand after the bowlers had restricted the Kiwis to 217.

The four quarter-finals were played in contrasting fashion. Pakistan cruised past the West Indies by 10 wickets in the first game after their bowlers had bowled them out cheaply.

In the second game, Australia bolstered by Ponting's 104 posted 260/6 against India but the hosts romped home by 5 wickets mainly thanks to fifties by Tendulkar, Gambhir and Yuvraj.

The third match saw South Africa choke yet again in crunch situations New Zealand eliminated them to seal a place in the last four.

The last quarter-final was a one way show as Sri Lanka chased down England's score of 229/6 with both openers Dilshan and Tharanga smashing centuries to give the Lankans a 10-wicket win.

FORMAT and VIEWERSHIP:

The 2015 edition shall also see 14 teams take part yet again. 10 of them constitute the Test playing nations while the other four spots are taken by the associate members who have to qualify. As of now the Ireland have qualified. The remaining 3 spots shall be determined by one team from the  2011–13 ICC World Cricket League Championship and two from the 2014 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

The World Cup has grown as a media event with each tournament. The International Cricket Council has sold the rights for broadcasting of the 2015 Cricket World Cup for US 2 billion dollars to ESPN Star Sports and Star Cricket. The event has a potential viewing audience of 953 million people, with some 800 million of those in Asia alone. According to Strong, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) wants to make the tournament the most fan-friendly event of its kind and take cricket to a wide range of communities throughout Australia and New Zealand.

When Australia and New Zealand bid for the 2011 Cricket World Cup in 2006, they said that it will see a 50–50 split in games with the final still up for negotiation, but the battle between Melbourne and Sydney had already begun to host the final. Other potential venues in Australia include Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. New Zealand have their regular cricket grounds namely Wellington, Hamilton, Auckland, Dunedin, Auckland and Christchurch to host games. In the 1992 edition the Kiwis played all matches at home and they thrived in familiar conditions with 7 wins from 8 games to top the group. Australia finished fifth narrowly missing out on a place in the semis.
The format in 2015 is the same as that of 2011. 14 teams shall participate. 2 groups of 7 teams each shall play mong themselves and the top four from each group will enter the quarter-finals. The topper of one group shall play the fourth ranked team of the other and vice-versa.

Captains Ready For ICC World Cricket 2015 League

Click Here to see: Six Sixes in one Over by Thisara Perrera

The six captains participating in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League [WCL] Division 3 spoke of their excitement and anticipation at a press conference yesterday [Apr 27], ahead of the start of the event in Bermuda tomorrow.
Bermuda, Italy, Nepal, Oman, Uganda and the USA will lock horns for a chance to finish in the top two and progress to the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier, which will be held in New Zealand in 2014 and feature 10 of the leading Associate and Affiliate teams.
The top two sides from the New Zealand event will then advance to the ICC’s flagship event, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, where they will compete against the ten Full Members on a global stage.
Bermuda captain Stephen Outerbridge says the opportunity for qualification to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 puts some pressure on the host team. “In 2007, Bermuda did play in the World Cup in the West Indies, so we do have that pressure coming into this event.
But at the end of the day we have to play good cricket no matter what division we are in. So we just look forward to the next few days and hopefully it all comes in our favour.”
Having recently finished second at the ICC Americas Division 1 Championship, the left hander feels his side is well prepared for the event on home soil. “I think the Board has given us ample opportunity to prepare for this tournament. We did also go to Barbados in February and then we did play in the ICC Americas Division 1 Championship and then a few games against the US, so I think we’ve shaped up well for this tournament.”
Uganda captain Davis Arinaitwe, whose side is facing the host in its first match, is strongly motivated to win immediate promotion from Division 3, having been relegated from Division 2 in 2011. “As a team we feel we’re here because of one game we lost in Division 2. As a unit we feel, because we are young and the kind of cricket we play, we’re good enough to go out there and be competitive just like in any other game.”
The 26-year old off-spinner says his side is focusing on playing good cricket rather than the possibility of advancing to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: “The brand of cricket we play is kind of ‘entertainment’ cricket. We want to keep things simple as well, but ideally we want to go out and win every kind of game that we play. We’re not looking to put pressure on ourselves with the fact that it is a qualifying event or that there is relegation at stake. Just to go out there – this is Bermuda, it is a beautiful country – so let’s go out and enjoy it.”
Alessandro Bonora, the skipper of the only European side in the tournament, Italy, is looking forward to a tough week of cricket against familiar teams: “It’s quite nice in a way to return to Division 3 because we see quite a lot of familiar faces – Nepal, Oman, USA – we’ve played against each other quite a lot recently, and Bermuda in Dubai in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2012.”
Returning to Division 3 after finishing fourth at the last event, the 34-year-old top-order batsman is confident that his squad has the experience to do well, despite the extra pressure of playing for an opportunity to advance to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: “We definitely think about the qualification opportunity, as I am sure all the teams do. But we have been together for a long time. We know our games plans and we know that this group of players can implement them consistently.”
Vaibhav Wategaonkar, captain of Oman, is confident that his side is prepared for a challenging week on the pitch. “It’s a good opportunity for us to play well in the tournament, and we’ll play match by match and see how it goes in the tournament.”
The left-hander says his side is well equipped to do one better than last time, when it finished third in Division 3 and narrowly missed out on promotion: “We have a good team, and we have done well at the last Division 3 tournament, so I’m hoping for the best this year.”
“We have been working hard for the last three to four months, and we came here early – 10 days prior to the tournament. The boys are doing well and I am happy with their performance,” he continued.
For Nepal captain Paras Khadka, there is no extra pressure despite the opportunities to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. “Playing for your country is always an opportunity as well as pressure. You should be ready to handle that. We’ve been playing well, and if we play to our potential, things should take care of themselves.”
The all-rounder, who was named Player of the Tournament at the recent ACC Twenty20 Cup 2013, believes his side is well prepared for the tournament in which every match counts: “As a team, we’ve been playing pretty well. But it’s the start of a new tournament and you can’t take anyone lightly.
“The higher we move up the WCL Division ladder, it’s more competitive, so as a team, we’ve been playing well, but it’s cricket – you have to go and perform from ball one. In the World Cricket League, what we’ve seen is that you have to play every match with the same intensity. A match here, a match there, you never know the results. So, we’ll take it one game at a time.”
USA captain Steve Massiah acknowledged that the tough week ahead won’t be made any easier by the thoughts of qualifying for the ICC’s flagship 50-over event in 2015. “Absolutely, the team thinks about what is at stake, and I’d like to take this opportunity to wish the five other competing nations all the best. I think there’s a lot at stake and also a lot of motivation for each team competing here.”
The 33-year old middle-order batsman was delighted to be playing alongside regional rival, Bermuda, who the USA recently defeated to win the ICC Americas Division 1 Championship. “I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Bermuda the very best – being that they, like us, are hoping to represent the Americas, I think that is great for the Americas region that we have two representatives here at Division 3.”
Massiah believes that the USA squad contains a good mixture of youth and experience. “We’ve been blooding the young players for a while and hoping that they will come through. I think it’s a good mixture of experience and a lot of exciting young players who look forward to the opportunity and obviously the opportunity is here for each and every one to fulfill our dreams which is to play in an ICC Cricket World Cup.”
